When we look at a picture similar to the one above, we may either cringe or feel empathy. We may either relate to the person's circumstances or be puzzled by how someone could allow a room to reach such a state. Numerous websites propose a connection between clutter and mental health, suggesting that situations like this arise when individuals feel overwhelmed. They believe that the task of tidying up seems like a huge job, leading them to leave it unattended, resulting in a worsening situation over time. Eventually, the feeling of embarrassment sets in as one realizes that their home has reached such a state.
The thing is that there are quite a lot of people whose homes look like this. We just don't know about it because we don't see inside everyone's homes when we pass them by. But the fact is that there are more people living like this than we might realize.
There are a lot of reasons as to why people live like this. One of them, as discussed, is that the task of de-cluttering seems like too big of a job. Other reasons are that we just have too much stuff. We accumulate so many things over the years that sometimes we don't have enough cupboard space anymore. Another reason for living in a way like this is that we aren't in love with cleaning up or organizing.
Regardless of the reasons behind the appearance of your home or certain rooms, what I want to emphasize today is that many individuals live in similar conditions. This is particularly true for those who lack assistance with household cleaning. I've observed that when people have the means to hire a cleaning service or employ someone, their homes do not resemble the one in the photo. It seems that the cleaning personnel or service ensures that everything the homeowner possesses has a designated place or assists in de-cluttering the home or room.
I think that if you find it difficult to de-clutter, it would be a blessing if you could hire a cleaning service for a day to help you organize and de-clutter. Otherwise, take it day by day and room by room. Decide what you haven't used in a long time and give that to charity. Then decide what you haven't used at all and give that as gifts to others. The things that you do use can be placed in your cupboards after space has been freed up by doing the first two mentioned things.
Don't be ashamed of your clutter; there are plenty of others in the same boat. It's just part of being human.
