If you're a salesman or business owner, there will always be opportunities where you try to land a sale. Sometimes you land the sale, and other times you don't. In the times when you don't land the sale, you feel disappointment and even frustration. Sometimes you even feel unhappy with the person or company you presented the sale to because, in your mind or with what you see, you are under the impression they can afford what you're selling.
At the gas station, a salesman is trying to sell a car cleaning product to customers who are refueling. This salesman is clever, humorous, and knows the product that he's trying to sell. He demonstrates its effectiveness on windshields, car interiors, and even car carpets, convincing you it can also work on home carpets. At the end of his pitch, he reveals the price. It's quite high, and some may not be able to afford it. Eventually, someone honestly tells him they won't be buying today. You notice his disappointment, and you also feel a bit sad. The reason that the person denied his offer, can't purchase it today is because he have been diagnosed with an illness requiring medical attention. This product is the last thing he can afford right now, but the salesman doesn't know that. He only sees the car the gentleman drives and assumes he can afford the product.
At times, we are unaware of the circumstances in people's lives. We may assume they reject a product or service because they dislike it. However, there could be a valid reason for their refusal, which we might not consider. We tend to avoid thinking negatively about others. Through this post, I want to encourage salespeople and business owners not to lose hope. You'll encounter many rejections, but a significant "yes" is just around the corner. Keep in mind that sometimes people decline your offer due to challenges they are facing.
