The following is a commentary made by J. Cole:
The divine warning is not to be like our fathers in their stubborn disobedience. Most of us are far more affected by the sins of our parents and grandparents than we realize (Exod. 34:7). If we have been blessed with godly parents, then certainly we should follow their godly example. But we should never follow our parents in their sins. The problem is, most of us have already fallen into our parents’ sins before we realize what we’re doing! When one of our kids was about two, riding in the car seat behind me, I came around a blind curve in the mountains and nearly rear-ended a car that had stopped in the middle of the road to admire the scenery. I slammed on the brakes, hit the horn, and yelled, “You jerk!” From the car seat behind me, a little voice echoed, “You jerk!” It grieved me to see my sweet little child picking up the sins of her father! I have often prayed for my children, that God would protect them from my sins..
A friend once mentioned to me that we can be influenced by generational sin, where our behaviors are shaped by what we observed or were taught by our parents. For instance, in impoverished areas, it is common to find a cycle of poverty and lack of education passed down from one generation to the next. Similarly, in neighborhoods plagued by gang violence, individuals often come from backgrounds of poverty and limited education, leading them to drop out of school and join gangs for survival. The experiences and teachings absorbed during childhood tend to impact one's adult life significantly.
If you had a parent who consistently focused on the negative aspects of every situation or spoke negatively about everything, you may unconsciously adopt the same mindset at times. For instance, you might only pay attention to the crime rates in your country, overlooking the beauty that each day offers for you and your loved ones.
Exo 34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
Exo 34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
Whatever you saw as an example from your parents, try to change to the way that God intended us to live life in abundance. The world see things like drunkenness, splurging on clothes, smoking a joint, etc, and the little pleasures you can allow yourself but if you try to live according to God's Word by accepting His Son, Jesus Christ, you might just find that your life is whole lot better. Loving God isn't just about what you can get from Him but rather what He have done for you. He excuses you from your wrong doings through Jesus Christ, by helping you not to live in Hell one day for the rest of your eternal life after this one on earth.
