Last year, I spoke with an elderly woman who was profoundly saddened by her sense of having no purpose in life. She shared with me that she has never understood what her purpose is in this life on earth.

I've been thinking about this a lot the last couple of days. Looking at people in my life, I can see what their purpose is. In Romans 12:6-8, God states the different gifts that each person have:

Your purpose in life

I've seen someone in my life who has the gift of serving. This person has been serving a family member who can't move properly anymore. This person has been washing the sick family member's clothes, cooking them food, taking them to the hospital, and bathing them. I felt extremely bad that this type of serving isn't something that I wanted to do until God showed me yesterday when I baked scones for someone in my family who has less than I do, that this is my gift. I have the gift of giving to help others generously.

We see in many places in God's Word (Rom 12, 1Co 12, and Eph 4:10), that there are many types of gifts that God gives us, and we need to take the time, get quiet, and take a look into our lives to see what we have to offer to others. We all have different resources and abilities that we have received from God or that God allowed to be developed in our lives. This is how we find our purpose.

Sometimes people need guidance in finding their purpose. When I spoke to the elderly woman last year, I helped her discover what gifts she has and how she's already been using them to make an impact on others' lives. Her gift is showing kindness. Wherever she goes and whoever she meets, she is kind towards them and friendly.

You have a purpose in this life. Take the time, become less busy and more quiet, and look into your life to see what you have to give to others.
